Research training
Research can feel confusing at first. This is not because you are incapable, but because the practical steps are rarely taught clearly. This page gives a practical, ethical, and repeatable approach to audits, QIPs, systematic reviews, and meta analyses, from idea to submission.
Core skills
1) Choosing a good question. A “good” question is specific, achievable in your setting, and aligned with a meaningful outcome. For audits and QIPs, this often means a well-defined standard (e.g., local guideline, NICE, trust policy), a measurable outcome, and a realistic timescale. For reviews, it means a focused clinical question and a method appropriate to the evidence available.
2) Methods and write-up. Most projects succeed or fail based on planning. Think through your data source, inclusion criteria, variables, and how you’ll present results before collecting anything. A simple structure helps: background → aim → methods → results → discussion → limitations → next steps.
3) Submission and publication basics. Work backwards from a target. If your aim is publication, identify a realistic journal early and skim their author guidance (format, word count, figure limits, referencing style). Align early to avoid rewriting later.
Practical tips we teach
- Keep it feasible: smaller, well-run projects beat large, unfinished ones.
- Evidence early: log meetings, approvals, and outputs as you go.
- Make it reproducible: use templates for methods, data tables, and reflection.
- Stay ethical: understand local governance early (audit vs research vs service evaluation).
